Ubuntu Mobile Demo

I found this video of a beta version of Ubuntu Mobile being demoed on a Gigabyte M528 MID. The user interface looks very impressive. There has not been a lot of coverage of Ubuntu Mobile but it seems to be coming along very nicely. As a big Ubuntu fan I hope this does very well and hope to see Ubuntu powered mobile devices everywhere.

Luxim's Plasma Lightbulb

A Silicon Valley company called Luxim has developed a tiny light bulb that's capable of delivering full spectrum light and able to give off the same amount of it as a street light but using much less power.
The bulb is based on a plasma of argon gas and operates at temperatures of up to 6000k. It can produce 140 lumens/watt which is much more than standard incandescent lamps(15 lumens/watt) or even high end LED's(70 lumens/watt). The ultra efficient device does not use electrodes to delivery electricity to the bulb, there is something called the 'puck' that delivers the energy by acting as an electrical lens.
There has been a lot of interest in LED's recently and its good to see alternative technologies competing against them. There was no mention of how much these will cost or when you might expect to see one in a street lamp near you. Check out the link below for a video of the bulb in action.

Hillary Under Fire

I came across this hilarious video of Hillary Clinton stretching the truth(lying) about her one of her past experiences. Did she not realise the event would be on video and it most definitely isn't the way she describes it. Maybe her bending of the truth has become so pathological that she actually believes the crap that comes out. Anyway here's that video:

Gnome Do

Gnome Do is an application which allows you to quickly search and open programs, documents,emails and even go to a website.

To install Gnome Do in Gutsy open up your terminal and type in the following command:

sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

Add the following two lines at the end of sources.list.

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/do-core/ubuntu gutsy main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/do-core/ubuntu gutsy main

Once you have done that you can go ahead and install using this command:

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install gnome-do

Using Gnome Do is very straight forward. To start the thing press Super(windows) + Space keys on your keyboard. Now start typing in the name of the application, file, folder or whatever your looking for until you see it displayed in the box.



The box on the right-hand side shows you what action hitting the return-key will do. Pressing the down arrow key will give you a list of other matching results.


If you want Gnome Do to start up automatically when you log in then open up the session manager which is located under System>Preferences. Click on the 'Add' button and copy what you see below:


This is a great time saving app, definitely worth a look.
